It is expected that climate change will lead to even more extreme weather events in the years to come, such as more hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons, heavier rain and snowfall as well as longer and more severe droughts. These changes are expected to lead to more disasters and spread of diseases and plagues. The melting of the glaciers alone will jeopardize the water supplies to hundreds of millions of people.
Recognizing this plight, we’re counting down to the United Nations Climate Conference in Copenhagen from December 7 – 18, 2009." title="Road to Copenhagen: Climate change is happening now." />Road to Copenhagen: Climate change is happening now.
Posted on October 26, 2009 | No CommentsThe number of weather-related disasters such as those caused by flood, drought and cyclones has doubled in the past 20 years. It is estimated that more than 55% of all the disasters that occurred in 2008 were climate-related. At the Red Cross Red Crescent, our work is protecting the most vulnerable, but our capacities are stretched with the increasing amount of disasters – in 2008, 140,000,000 people were affected by climate-related disasters.
