To mark World Red Cross Red Crescent Day on May 8th 2012, we want to capture and exhibit online the experiences and ideas of volunteers from across the world. It’s your opportunity to show everyone how and why our amazing community of volunteers do what they do. Getting involved is very easy.

1. Take a great photo

A picture speaks a thousand words, so tell us about your Red Cross Red Crescent experience with a photo. It doesn’t need to be about a trip to some exotic location or dramatic event – unless that’s what you’re experiencing – but should show the world your work, effects or your passion for the movement.

Also, don’t worry if you don’t have access to the latest technology. Many mobile phones have decent cameras and we’re more interested in capturing your experience than something technically perfect.

That said, it’s always a good idea to try to take the best photo that you can. Here’s some advice.

Scroll down the page, and upload your picture using the comments box below. You can log in using your Twitter, Facebook or Google account and also subscribe to the comments to get updates on other submissions.

Please resize your images to be no larger than 1024 pixels on the longest edge.

A caption of 100-200 words will help other visitors understand the meaning of your image and could also link to your National Society or local Red Cross Red Crescent pages.

The
Georgia Red Cross Society tries to encourage and support the youth in meeting
the needs of vulnerable people in local communities and jointly make a
difference to vulnerable people in meaningful ways. The GRCS youth (volunteers)
together with Disaster Management team elaborated small-scale mitigation
project. Within the project 3000 walnut
trees were planted in landslide prone areas in Racha-Lechkhumi and Qvemo
Svaneti region (in such hazard zones as Oni, Ambrolauri and Tsageri). It was
decided to plant trees as preventive measures for landslide for protection of
local population. The project was jointly agreed with local and regional
authorities, Red Cross branches and the local population. When it came to
choose what kind of trees to plant, it was decided to plant walnut trees as the
region is well-known for their walnuts but also because of the suitable root
system of the trees, as the primary reason for planting was to reduce the risk
of landslides. This activity has a double effect:

1)
Protect local population from landslides and 2) Increase the income of the
population through walnut sale.

Local
population was happy. One of the participants of the event said that he gave
names of his grandchildren to the trees planted by him and he hopes that this
will remind them of their grandfather. The Governor of the Racha-Lechkhumi and
Qvemo Svaneti region thanked GRCS in his TV interview and underlined the
importance of the event.

July, 2011. Baku, Ramana village. Summer camp for
orphanage children and children with psycho-neurological disabilities.
Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society regularly organizes summer vacations for
orphanage and disabled children within its Psychosocial Support project for
vulnerable people to create an opportunity to have a rest in friendly and
joyful atmosphere. Red Crescent volunteers organized with children active
participation different performances full with playing, dancing and singing,
thus children could demonstrate their abilities.

April, 2011. Kusar region,
Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan Red Crescent volunteers paid visit to this old person,
who is living alone for a long time in one of the remote villages of Kusar
region. He had insult several years ago
and was paralyzed, thus unable to fully look after himself. Volunteers are
frequently visiting him, supporting to eat, shave, clean his house and buy
products. Volunteers support to him and many other elderly alone people in this
village is very important and give an opportunity to have attention and family
care.

June, 2010. Qazax region, Bala-Jafarli village. Since 2005 with support
of ICRC and different donors Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society implements in
front line villages situated in the west part of Azerbaijan Safe Play Area
project aimed to provide children with safe playgrounds where they can play
without being exposed to danger from mines and explosive remnants of war (ERW)
and the parents are less worried for lives and safety of their children. So far
54 SPAs were established, thus young residents of the villages like the one
demonstrated in the picture could safely play games and swing.

May, 2011. Baku, Sabunchi rayon. Boarding school. Representative
of Azerbaijan Red Crescent Youth Committee is reading with young boys article
from Red Cross and Red Crescent Magazine. Two or three times in a week National
Society Youth Committee members visit boarding schools situated in Baku and
regions to spend with young boys and girls several hours helping them with
lessons, reading books, playing games or organize for them different events,
take them for a walk to visit museums, theatres, historical places. Also
children have an opportunity to be acquainted with Red Cross and Red Crescent
Movement and the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society in particular, its mission and
activities, thus may be in the future they could be either members or
volunteers.

The sadness due to lost home is the hardest pain for the vulnerable
people. Macedonian Red Cross volunteers are trying to reduce the damage of the
fire that has ruined the only place of one family that is left on the streets
without money and roof. This volunteer managed to reduce the pain, helped this
woman to safe most of her meaningful staff from her home and gave her a sincere
hug for support. This picture is a first place winner from the national Red
Cross competition “Find the volunteer inside you” in 2011. The picture is named
“Brightening a path” and photo credits are signed to Kiril Karakas – volunteer

Undoubtedly the Red Cross Volunteers play significant role in helping
people in need. The
power of unity in the biggest and the most powerful humanitarian organization
in the world is a feeling of humanity and awareness that cannot be easily
described. Macedonian Red Cross volunteers joined the world – wide campaign
“Find the volunteers inside you”. Through the releasing of balloons, the
volunteers are sending a message for humanity, a message for the need of
helping one of each other in the world.

Macedonian Red Cross through the program “Red Cross in Action-Promotion
of Human Values” (RCA-PHV) recruits young volunteers in the organization. The young people are trained on the topics: Red Cross, culture,
communication, how to create and document small projects, and after the

1200 young people with different ethnical, national, religious and
social background from 34 Red Cross branches prepare around 120 small projects

Sometimes as volunteers we get called on for mock exercises, which allow us to participate in and evaluate the emergency responses of various organizations, including our own Canadian Red Cross. This allows us to maintain our training when responding during quieter times. In this photo I was a “casualty” of a “hazardous spill” and needed to be triaged for my injuries and decontaminated. Nothing says fun like stripping down to your underwear with a bunch of firefighters so that the Decontamination Process can be properly evaluated. This was a small part of a larger municipal mock training exercise in which our local Red Cross volunteers participated in 2011. The exceptioonal training we get for our volunteer roles really ensures we have the confidence to carry out our duties, regardless of our volunteer role with the Red Cross.

Dublin man Greg Lyons was elected this in 2011 as the first ever Youth Representative to sit on the governing body of the Irish Red Cross, its Central Council.
Darren Ryan, Chairman of the National Youth Working Group, stressed the significance of this new appointment, “This is a significant move in the right direction for Irish Red Cross. It will mean that Irish Red Cross Youth now have a voice at the governance level of the society and in turn will allow the elected representative to run for the Executive Committee, who act as the Board of the Irish Red Cross”.

Approximately 150 young volunteers from all over Ireland met at the Irish Red Cross Youth Forum in Athlone to elect their representative. Nominees were invited to attend the Youth Forum to address the voting members. Lyons was declared the winner after obtaining a majority of the vote. Speaking after his election, as part of his inaugural speech as Youth Representative Lyons said he would, “Represent the voice of Youth to the best of his ability and always put the development of Youth first”.
The position of Youth Representative for the Central Council was created as part of the new governance structure of the Irish Red Cross. Donal Forde, Secretary General of the Irish Red Cross, said, “I’m delighted with Greg Lyons’ election to our Central Council. Red Cross Youth represents the future of our Society and this is another step to ensure that they will have a strong voice in our decision making process. I look forward to working closely with Greg and all his colleagues on the IRC Youth Working Group”. Within his new role Lyons will attend meetings of the Central Council, which is the governing body of the Irish Red Cross. Within his function on the council Lyons will speak for approximately 30% of the Irish Red Cross’ overall membership, all of whom are youth members aged between 5 and 25, on all matters regarding the governance of the Irish Red Cross.Irish Red Cross Youth is made up of members who take part in local and national activities aimed at empowering them with skills and training in areas such as first aid, personal development and international and cultural understanding. Irish Red Cross Youth: Positive Images ….
The Irish Red Cross Muff branch recently held a successful cultural diversity night with people from different groups in the community showcasing food, music, language and traditions from their culture. Community members from a variety of backgrounds including Chinese, Brazilian and Irish attended the evening. Bernie Rutherford, member of the IRC National Youth Working Group and youth leader in Muff said, “the evening was enjoyed by all and provided an opportunity to learn a little more about each other’s cultural traditions as well sampling some delicious foods from around the globe”.The event was organised as part of the Muff branches involvement with the Irish Red Cross Youth Project – Positive Images. Can you imagine what it feels like to be a refugee? To be forced to flee your country and make your way to a new land? To negotiate physical borders and cultural barriers as you try to keep your family safe and give them a normal life? Ten delegates from Irish Red Cross Youth got the chance to not just hear about the struggles that refugees face, but to experience some of them themselves when they took part in the “Youth on the Run” programme in Iceland.
The purpose of the “Youth on the Run” programme is to enable young people to put themselves in the shoes of refugees and asylum seekers around the world, via a 24-hour role-play game. The role-play is based upon the interaction of participants (who play the roles of refugees) and instructors (who play the roles of various characters that the refugees meet on their long journey). By using this unconventional learning method, young people are more likely to develop tolerance for refugees and reduce prejudice and racism.

The Irish Red Cross team consisted of five participants: Gary Gaughan (17, Clontarf Branch), Paul Price (18, Navan Branch), David Hayes (19, Mallow Branch), Ellen White (17, Carrick an Suir Branch) and Megan Dawson (17, Limerick City Branch) who were accompanied by five leaders: Caitriona Ryan (NYWG), Kevin Brennan (NYWG), Tom Doyle (Santry Branch), Orla Murphy (Mallow Branch) and Catriona Finn (Youth Department Staff). Teams from the Red Cross National Societies of Belgium (Flanders), Germany and Italy also took part.

The team were given the opportunity to take part in the game – assuming new identities, joining new families and struggling with bureaucracy, borders and the uncertainty of what was going to happen next. After the game, they attended workshops and training with the Icelandic Red Cross in order to prepare them to become instructors and leaders and to learn to run the game themselves. The experience was a challenging one, but worthwhile according to David Hayes, “Actually placing yourself in a refugee’s footsteps for a day was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, having totally changed my outlook on their plight. I simply don’t think I could imagine how their life is, without having played the game”.
Project Manager and Game Leader Arnar Benjamín Kristjánsson was impressed by the dedication of the Irish team and expressed his confidence in their ability to bring it back to Ireland successfully: “The Irish team did extremely well and I’m very proud of them, I think they will be good instructors and they have my seal of approval. And that seal is not given out to anybody; people must really deserve it to get it.”
The Icelandic Red Cross have been running the game in Iceland since 1999, but this international training was conceived in 2008 when Arnar Benjamín Kristjánsson (Icelandic Red Cross) and Martina Vertuccio (Italian Red Cross) decided to try to promote the game to other Red Cross National Societies in Europe. With them, the team of Þrúður Kristjánsdóttir (Project Manager and Game Leader, Icelandic Red Cross), Jón Þorsteinn Sigurðsson (Project Manager and National Board Member, Icelandic Red Cross), Jón Brynjar Birgisson (Staff member Icelandic Red Cross), Hannes Arnórsson (Icelandic Red Cross) and Steindór Gunnar Steindórsson (Icelandic Red Cross) spent months translating the game materials and organising the logistics and rollout of the game before contacting the four other participating countries to apply to the European Youth Office for funding.

NEWS SERVICE- SUCCESS STORY – FAMILY REUNIFICATION AFTER 15 YEARS

Due to Economic hardship, social problems, conflicts and
natural disasters separates millions of families. The affected persons
experience the terrible anguish of being separated from their loved ones, of
not knowing where they are or what has happened to them and do not know where
to turn to find a missing relative or how to get a message from them. The Red
Cross Tracing Service operates around the world, to re-establish contacts between
separated family members and re-unite them whenever possible.

The Indian Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch,
Tracing Department received a Red Cross Message from Malaysian Red Crescent
Society on 13.03.2012 through National Head Quarters, New Delhi via mail. One
Mr.Kamal Mohamed Ali who is detained in Lenggeng Immigration Detention Dept.
Malaysia has sent a message to his wife residing at Pettai,Tirunelveli
District. He requested his wife to send back the reply along with Ration ID
proof which will help him for his early release and return back to home. The
same was sent to Red Cross of Tirunelveli District Branch for further process.
Mr.Chokalingam, Secretary; IRCS Tirunelveli District Branch (also the FNS Dist.
Focal Person) handed over the Red Cross Message to the family members within an
hour. The family felt very happy to receive the message because the
communication was established between the separated family members after 15
years.

Further,
NHQ & ICRC forwarded the collected ID proof of Mr.Kamal Mohamed Ali to the
authorities of Malaysia immigration it was accepted by them and they released
Mr.Kamal Mohammed Ali . Unfortunately he doesn’t have any passport or Visa to
return to India. ICRC provided Travel Document which is internationally
accepted (equal to Visa) document for one way trip. The travel document is
valid up to end of the April2012. Now he needs the Air Ticket to return India. But
there is no provision in Lenggeng Immigration Detention Dept. Malaysia.

Hence
the family member of the detainee in Tirunelveli have approached the
Tirunelveli Red Cross for the purchase of
the Air Ticket. Mr.D.A.Prabakar, Chairman IRCS, Tirunelveli, Mr.Chokkalingam Secretary,
IRCS, Tirunelveli, M.A,Ameeruddin, Mr.K.Muthuramalingam
, Members IRCS, Tirunelveli ,Mr.N.Krishnamurthy TO, IRCS Tamil Nadu Branch , were
sponsored the Air ticket amount also arranged a Car from Trichy to Tirunelveli.
The family was very happy. As per the request from ICRC the ticket was purchased
in Air Asia from Malaysia up to Trichy and the same was emailed to ICRC through
the IRCS TNB and it was reached Mr.Kamal Mohamed Ali on the same day.

On
15.04.2012 morning, Mr.Kamal Mohamed Ali reached the Trichy Airport; the family

The Brazilian Red Cross Brasilia set aside hundreds of donations to assist the population affected by natural disaster.

These pictures show members of German Red Cross in an exercise in the south of Black Forrest: A bus accident with 51 persons affected. The exercise was organised and done together with the firebrigade, mountain rescue and the German Federal Technical Agency. The persons affected were “played” and “painted” by Red Cross Youth.

1. The Crimea
regional Ukrainian RC organization implements a youth-oriented program “Pass your
kindness around a circle”. Due to the program young RC volunteers are involved
into traditional RC activities, non-violence culture dissemination and healthy
living promotional activities.
2. These are the smallest volunteers of the
Crimean RC regional organization. Despite being just first and second year
pupils they already participated in the variety of charity campaigns including
the program “Pass your kindness around”.
