Volunteering leads to a whole new world

This year’s World Red Cross Red Crescent Day on May 8th, has as its theme ‘Youth on the move’, so this is story about a volunteer who went on to become a member of the IFRC’s Youth Commission would appear to be entirely appropriate.

“It’s so funny to think back,” says Wilkins. “I think I had always had the capacity and inkling I wanted to lead something. It was the Red Cross that gave me the opportunity.”

Wilkins quickly moved beyond clerical work. She attended a Red Cross youth leadership development program the next summer and found her calling. The girl who just months earlier didn’t know anyone outside her own high school began leading other teens throughout the area – and now throughout the world – to volunteer with the global organization.

Tell us about your Red Cross Red Crescent story. Before May 8th!
