Faces of the tsunami disaster: Zamzami

Almost five years since the tsunami disaster, the Red Cross Red Crescent has helped hundreds of thousands of survivors take significant steps along the road to recovery.
Zamzami, a 60 year-old male raises fish in a float fish pond in Tanoh Manyang village. People raise fish in the natural water to sell at market when they are fully grown. This program is implemented by the Child Fund and funded by the American Red Cross.

The highlight of my day is “Borehole 11”. Remarkably this is not just a water point built by the Red Cross, but the very name of a village home to a 130,000 people. An additional 24,000 people, nomad families affected by the current drought, have built their huts around the village.

Maldivian Red Crescent is the newest addition to the Red Cross and Red Crescent family. The new National Society was born on 16 August 2009 when its inaugural General Assembly was held in the island nation’s capital, Male’.
The establishment of the Maldivian Red Crescent is welcomed by the enthusiastic youth of the Maldives, who are excited to have a opportunity to join thousands of Red Cross and Red Crescent youth taking action in response to various humanitarian challenges around the globe.
